How Old Is My Boiler?

We are often asked the age of a boiler as this can affect the choice of spare parts, and whether it is more economical to repair or replace.

Most boiler manufacturers include the date of manufacture in their serial numbers; the knack is interpreting it.

Ideal

Serial number XV 20583800049059 1402 14/01/09

The third word has 4 digits 1402.

Digits 1 and 2 indicate the year e.g. 14 for 2014

Digits 3 and 4 indicate the calendar week e.g. 02 for January

This is verified in the fourth word 14/01/09 which expands to 2014 January 09.

So this boiler was manufactured 9th January 2014

Vaillant

Serial number 21240100100204021300605157N4

Digits 3 and 4 indicate the year e.g. 24 for 2024

Digits 5 and 6 indicate the calendar week e.g. 01 for January

So this boiler was manufactured in January 2024

Worcester Bosch

Worcester Bosch use a 3 digit FD (Factory Date) number to indicate the manufacturing date. This is common across all Bosch products, from dishwashers to washing machines.

First identify the FD number from the serial number, then compare to the table below.

Serial Number Style 1, used from Jan 1997 until June 2010, Serial No.: 7716130155 6842205631

The first 10 digits are the boiler model, in this case a Greenstar 18Ri. The next 3 digits 684 are the FD code, meaning April 2006

Serial Number Style 2, used from July 2010 onwards, Serial No.: 5570 – 006 – 000334 – 7716130137.

The 5th, 6th and 7th digits are the FD code. In this example 006 means June 2010.
